Incinerator Approved By Region Despite Concerns & Public Opposition

The incinerator environmental assessment was approved on a vote of 16 to 12.

Colleen was opposed citing a number of health, environmental and financial concerns.

"The entire gas tax funding has been committed to this half a billion dollar garbage burning incinerator.  This means less money for "zero waste initiatives", public transit and other environmentally progressive enhancements.  We are burning our money as well as our garbage and we will be left with breathing, eating and drinking it in the form of chemicals and heavy metals produced by the incineration process" says Colleen.

Thousands of emails and delegations were received from residents who included educators, health professionals, engineers, labour organizations and environmental groups. Seventy doctors from the Region also registered their opposition to the project.

Health and environmental concerns as well as the record of escalating costs and failures of Public Private Partnerships (P3s) were the main concerns.

Union representatives from the United States also cited concerns about the selected proponent, Covanta's environmental and labour relations record.

Contrary to the overwhelming opposition from citizens, Regional Council moved forward with this project.
