Council Highlights - June 11, 2007

Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative

Council endorsed the resolution provided by the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative - Water conservation Framework.  Staff will be developing a water conservation plan, in 2008, for facilities and programs operated by the Town and will work toward achieving a 15 percent reduction in total water usage, for municipal purposes, by the year 2015.

Range Line Road Traffic Calming Assessment

The Range Line Road Traffic Calming Assessment was approved.  Design and tenders are expected to be completed in August with construction commenced prior to the end of 2007.

Neighborhood One

Council endorsed the recommendation that staff initiate a review of applicable zoning regulations, dealing with building height, lot coverage, setbacks, roof pitches etc. instead of designating Neighborhood One as an Heritage Conservation District.  Council authorized staff to examine the appropriateness of seeking a heritage designation for one or more residential dwellings at Nos. 30 to 34 Churchill Road and nos. 32, 33 and 36 Roosevelt Avenue, in consultation with the Heritage Advisory Committee, in recognition of their status as among the last remaining examples of Defence Industries Limited housing in Ajax.

Town recognizes Louise Johnson as its Senior of the Year

At the Town's annual seniors' barbecue today (June 8), Mayor Steve Parish presented Ajax resident, Louise Johnson, the 2007 Ajax Senior of the Year Award.

"Louise is an excellent community supporter, volunteer, and an active and caring Senior in the Town of Ajax," said Mayor Parish at today's presentation. "She is a very deserving recipient of the award."

A resident since 1942, Ms. Johnson was an employee of Defence Industries Limited, the munitions plant set-up by the Canadian government to supply ammunition to the Allies during WWII. She settled in Ajax after the plant's closure at the end of the war and has contributed significantly to the community for the past fifty years.

Ms. Johnson has been a member of the Ajax Seniors Friendship Club since 1987, and is an active member of St. Paul's United Church in Ajax. In 1991, she was awarded the Ajax Civic Award, which recognizes Town residents who have made a contribution of an outstanding nature to the well being Ajax. The award is the highest honour the Town bestows on its residents.

The Senior of the Year Award, established in 1994 by the Ontario Government, gives each municipality in the province the opportunity to honour an outstanding local senior who demonstrates commitment to enriching the social, cultural and civic lives of fellow seniors.
