SPECIAL
PUBLIC INFORMATION SESSION
Proposed
Expansion of Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant
The Regions of York
and Durham are reaching the end of an Environmental Assessment (EA) process
commenced in 2004 for the purpose of expanding the 30-year old Duffin Creek
Water Pollution Control Plant to accommodate future growth and development
within both Regions for the next 30 years and beyond. This Plant is located at the outlet of the York Durham Sewage
System (“Big Pipe”), which collects wastewater generated by industrial,
commercial and residential sources from a geographic area currently extending
west into Vaughan and north into Newmarket, including Ajax and Pickering.
The Plant is situated just west of Rotary Park and the Duffins Creek
wetland along the Lake Ontario waterfront within the City of Pickering.
The Regions are
seeking approval from the Minister of the Environment to increase the Plant’s
capacity from an average of 420,000 cubic metres/day to 630,000 cubic metres/day.
Durham Region’s recent Biosolids
Master Plan and Septage Management Strategy are relying on the Plant expansion
to treat increasing volumes of solid and liquid waste generated by future
population growth and new industry.
Staff have
expressed concern to the Regions about potential environmental and public health
impacts. Council is seeking
assurance from the Regions, through technical reports to be provided, that the
expanded Plant will not adversely affect the Town’s air and water quality.
You are invited to
attend this Special Public Information Session, hosted by the Regions of York
and Durham at the request of Ajax Council, to learn more about the proposed
Plant expansion. Regional staff
will present information at 7 p.m. and be available to answer questions:
