Town’s vision of a publicly-owned waterfront becoming a reality

September 17, 2005

Today, during a community B.B.Q. at Lakeside Park, Mayor Steve Parish announced the Town had closed a deal with the Hornung family that finalized the purchase of a 20 - acre piece of waterfront property at Shoal Point Road and Lake View Boulevard.

T his property had also been the subject of interest for developers, who in 2001 submitted a draft proposal for 16 dwellings that would occupy 3.13 acres of the lake view lands.

The Hornung property has significant ecological value. The lands will be added to the Natural Heritage and Costal Wetland System of Carruthers Creek (Ajax) and Cranberry Marsh/Lynde Shores (Whitby) and are also important elements of a series of coastal wetlands that line the lakeshore as far west as Frenchman’s Bay and the mouth of the Rouge River

Construction of the Waterfront Trail through the Pickering Beach area east to the Ajax/ Whitby boundary is scheduled for completion this year with construction on the newly acquired Hornung property set to begin in early October.

The Town began negotiations with the Hornung family in 2002. On December 6, 2004, council voted to conditionally approve the purchase of the land for $3 million with the Region of Durham contributing $500,000.
