Regional
Chair should be on the ballot: Ajax Council
September 28, 2005
Ajax council has voted to add the referendum question of direct
election of the Chair of the Regional Municipality of Durham to
the November 2006 municipal ballot. The question would give voters
the choice to decide if council should ask the province to allow
residents of the Region to directly vote for the chair.
Ajax Council are asking other Durham municipalities to support
this initiative and to add the question to their ballots. In order
for the result to be binding on council, at least 50 per cent of
the eligible electors in Ajax must vote on the question and more
than 50 per cent of the votes must be in favour.
Currently, the chair is appointed by a majority vote of regional
council at the beginning of each term.
